Coca-Cola in Space

"In the vast, silent expanse of space, even a whisper of Earth can be a shout of familiarity; such is the magic of sipping Coca-Cola among the stars."

In 1985, as the Space Shuttle Challenger burst through the atmosphere on the STS-51-F mission, it carried a cargo that would forever change the trajectory of soda consumption in space.

Within the confines of the spacecraft, an unassuming aluminum canister marked the beginning of an era—the era of the "Coca-Cola Space Can."

This groundbreaking innovation allowed astronauts to enjoy the first ever carbonated beverage in space, as Coca-Cola became the pioneer of fizzy drinks in the cosmos.

But the story doesn't end there. PepsiCo, unwilling to let its rival bask in the glory of this achievement, was also hard at work, developing its own "Pepsi Space Can."

These two competing space cans marked the beginning of the extraterrestrial "Cola Wars," a rivalry that would span decades and cross the boundaries of Earth's atmosphere.

MICROGRAVITY CHALLENGES

Creating a can that could successfully dispense a carbonated beverage in microgravity was no easy feat.

While Earth's gravity ensures that the gas bubbles in a carbonated drink rise to the surface and release their pressure, the absence of gravity in space causes these bubbles to remain suspended throughout the liquid.

This presented a unique challenge for engineers, who had to find a way to ensure that the beverage could be consumed without the gas and liquid separating.

The Coca-Cola Space Can used a collapsible, accordion-like structure with a one-way valve to dispense the beverage.

The valve allowed gas to escape from the can while preventing the liquid from escaping, enabling astronauts to enjoy the Coke without creating a fizzy mess.

Similarly, the Pepsi Space Can employed a built-in straw and a pressurized mechanism to dispense the liquid, ensuring the integrity of the carbonated beverage in space.

The next chapter in the saga of Coca-Cola in space began a decade later, as advancements in technology allowed for the development of more sophisticated dispensing systems.

In 1995, Coca-Cola introduced the "Coca-Cola Space Dispenser" (CCSD), which aimed to provide astronauts with an even more enjoyable and authentic soda-drinking experience.

Launched aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-63 mission, the CCSD featured a unique system that dispensed Coke and Diet Coke without causing the beverage to foam excessively in microgravity.

With the CCSD, astronauts no longer had to rely on cumbersome cans to quench their thirst for carbonated beverages.

Instead, they could enjoy their favorite soda from specially designed cups—which utilized a combination of surface tension and a unique dispensing nozzle to prevent the beverage from turning into foam.

While the engineers at Coca-Cola were certainly successful in finding ways to dispense carbonated beverages in space, they soon discovered that the experience of consuming the product was not quite the same as on Earth.

During the STS-63 mission, astronauts were given the opportunity to test the Coca-Cola Space Dispenser and evaluate the taste of the soda in microgravity.

The results were intriguing.

The absence of gravity affected the carbonation of the beverage, altering its flavor and mouthfeel.

Astronauts reported that the taste of Coca-Cola in space was different from that on Earth—and while the experience was enjoyable—it was not quite the same as sipping a refreshing Coke back home.

THE GREEN CAN

As concerns about environmental sustainability grew, Coca-Cola took a step towards a greener future in the late 1990s by partnering with the University of Colorado to develop a recyclable space can.

This innovative can was designed not only to be more environmentally friendly, but also to be better suited for use in the challenging environment of space.

The improved dispensing system aimed to reduce the risk of spills and messes—ensuring that astronauts could enjoy their favorite beverage without worrying about the potential hazards of floating droplets in a spacecraft.

The recyclable space can was a testament to Coca-Cola's commitment to finding innovative solutions that catered to both the needs of astronauts and the demands of an increasingly eco-conscious society.
